What does your friends, family, co-workers think of Deb?

What does your friends, family, co-workers, etc. think of Deb and are any of them fans or atleast like some of her songs?

Honestly, I don't know anybody who's into her and also have never heard of her (though most of my peers/relatives are into hip hop, R&B, current Top 40).

I'm not really sure what most of my co-workers have thought about her or much else.  I've had friends that were into her back in high school but I haven't seen many of them since then and that's been 20 years now.

On the nostalgia board, I'm pretty much not taken seriously and a week ago somebody posted a mean spirited "joke" that thankfully got deleted.  About a year ago, about 5 regular members posted rude, immature, and ignorant comments on a thread about "Predictions For 2008" when I posted that Deb gets a comeback.

I don't post threads that much anymore. Usually about animation, songs/artists, and even some  annoying tv shows/movies that happen to be in my head. Also a few about Deb (only once every few months...when there's news about her) to get her music exposed with song links/bio and to show that she's more than an '80's pop princess.


Then again, most of the members are into political rants, celebrity gossip/bashing, and acting as if they're wannabe music critics. Most of the members' music tastes are diversed from classic rock, alternative, new wave,  current Top 40, and some of in between.

Granted that I've trashed celebs every now or then, but I usually like to post topics about things that I find interesting or enjoy.

I've never actually been made fun of for listening to Deb (outside of messageboards). Only a very, very  few times and nothing mean spirited.  Also most of my peers aren't familar.

There's a comment on "Deb Stories" from DGIFonline, which is visible to everybody, from a man who got ridiculed by his ex-wife for being a fan of Deb.

I found it  dumb to dump somebody just for their musical taste though there's probably more to it which the person didn't want to mention and prefers to keep it private.

Also I would compromise  since I wouldn't take friends/lover to a concert or film that they're not interested in seeing.

If my girlfriend (hypothetically speaking, though not interested) is  into pop music, ballads, or have a wide musical taste, I'd probably introduce her songs from Deb and other artists. 

Probably "Think With Your Heart" or selected ballads like "Someone You Love" or "One Hand, One Heart" would be best to play as background music at a dinner date.

Oh I can think of some bad music to play; gangsta rap, prison rap, and emo.  Nothing will kill a romantic mood faster than listening to some thug rapping about where he hides his stash in his cell or shanking somebody in the yard.

On a thread about ballads, a few don't consider Deb a 'ballad artist'.



I'm aware that most remember her as a '80's "teen pop" singer, but  her two  #1 hits were ballads during her 'electric youth' ("Foolish Beat" & "Lost In Your Eyes") and some of her influences were Billy Joel and Elton John. Though I associate her more as an underrated  pop singer/songwriter  (both uptempo pop and soothing ballads) and stage actress. Though I personally consider her among the best when it comes to pop ballads.




A comment. A bit ironic since Whitney Houston and Bryan Adams were also popular in the 1980's and also did uptempo songs.

Not at all - in the US and UK, the big hits were catchy pop / dance... New Kids, Debbie Gibson, Rick Astley, Soul II Soul, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson.

The only ballad heavy era was the mid 90s with Celine, Whitney, Bryan Adams, Mariah Carey... oy!
