Deborah Gibson, underrated pop singer/songwriter & stage actress

I've actually slightly updated the thread with newer pics and interviews when I bumped it.

As if anybody's wondering, I mostly post on the board (bored) games time to time and only post whenever I feel like it or if there's an interesting thread about film roles or ruining '80's pop songs. Also known for being controversial, which a few actually agree that she should appear in other roles and others take offense to my constructive criticism. There's been a few Deb bashing, but mostly replies from my criticism about today's pop "music".  I've done a few surveys on the forum, which mostly results like "Never Heard Of Her" or her music being "corny" or "outdated".

note: first reply. BTW, not the  performer from MTV's Jack@ss

Hahaha I actually thought about you when I went to the flower shop (don't ask) today, because I turned on the radio and "Only In Dreams" was playing. Haha... yeah I know... weird! But yeah Mrs Gibson is pretty sweet

...mostly "never heard of her" type replies  (which I rather not mention) Roll Eyes

Recent replies and quite positive, which I find a bit suprising since the majority of the board are into The Hills, Ashlee Simpson, Disney Channel brand pop acts, and even a certain former pop princess  with the initials "B.S.".

Today on Z100 [NY radio station] Greg T gives piggy back rides for $5 for the charity Rainbows & Pete Wentz gave him $1000 for his piggy back ride. So they were calling out all these celebrity names on air this morning & if one of them were listening & called back, Z100 would give $1000. So they called out some celeb names & then said if anyone else thinks they are classified as a celebrity to call & Deborah Gibson called. She said she was listening because she is doing a show in Atlantic City or something & just so happened to be listening. I thought that was cool & thought I would share.

That sounds like a good thing to me.  Those that post things like "Ashlee Simpson is still better" are hopelessly lost though.  Roll Eyes

QUOTE (ElectricYouth @ May 5 2008, 08:41 PM)
Deb started her Atlantic City show yesterday...

Deb does 60's covers
"Downtown", "It's My Party"

"Electric Youth"... funny she's 37, old enough to be a parent of a teenager herself, and singing a song titled "Electric Youth"...

She has a great voice.
I LOVE "It's My Party!"

note: I have nothing against Deb singing "Electric Youth". It's just a thought.

An observation thread: Who Do You Think Will Become The Youngest Artist To Write, Produce, and Write a #1 hit?

Didn't mention Deb since it's would end up being off topic (and some rude comments) and also didn't criticize anybody from Disney Channel and certain party girls since it would end up as a dumb argument (BTW, not a fan of Jonas Brothers, though I know they write their own material). The replies are better than I expected.

added: BTW, I doubt the record would be broken anytime soon and it was just a thought since on the "Dr. Phil" interview Deb stated that she wants somebody to takeover the title while talking about Camp Electric Youth.

Back in 1988 I thought that Deborah would have passed that record on to someone else by now but it hasn't happened and right now I'm not sure it's going to happen anytime in the near or maybe even distant future.  Nobody writes or produces their own songs anymore.  At least not in the rock/pop/R&B world except for Alicia Keys and she's too old to break the record.

All they want them to do now is lip synch and look pretty.  There was some of that 20 years ago but now it's like that's all they do.  The thing is that young people today just accept it and don't even question it.

Lip sync is certainly nothing new, here's a performance that screams lip sync...

One thing I never understood is why several  variety/music shows like "American Bandstand" & "Soul Train" featured artists lip synching...

I know several like "Midnight Special", "SNL" (well, back in the day) had bands actually performing.

"American Bandstand" used to require it for some reason.  I remember when Deborah did the show she didn't find out about that rule until about an hour before.  She didn't like it but she had to go through with it.

The thing that gets me is how lip syncing is now just ignorned when 20 years ago it had a stigma attached to it.  It was like "you aren't good enough to do it live."

I remember NKOTB go into trouble over it.  I remember back in 90 mtv did a big feature on on The Week In Rock.  I think Deb, NKOTB, and Tiffany were on it.

Why was Deb mentioned?

Though wouldn't be suprised since 1990 was the year when the infamous Milli Vanilli scandal that caused a backlash against pop music when the world discovered that they lip syched and got their Grammy award (thankfully) taken away.

In 1989 there was an episode of "Club MTV" that featured the infamous duo, which the song was skipping during thr "performance", which was mentioned on  their  "Behind the Music". Only if the Grammy commitee (sp) had seen that episode...  Roll Eyes

note: "Club MTV" also featured artists lip synching... a mystery that most people, including myself, will never know. I know those shows were pre-taped, but doesn't explain why...

There was a group called Technotronic that featured a male as lead "vocals", but the video for "Pump Up The Jam" featured a female model in spandex.

Ashlee Simpson was/still is popular after her so-called "acid reflux" incident on "SNL" a few years ago and not let forget about a certain former pop princess' "performance" at the "Video Music Awards" last year (probably one of the worst tv "performances" ever shown on tv)...
