No suprise on #1, but suprised that there's not a Madonna video in the Top 10 and "Take On Me" (the greatest  video of the '80's, IMHO)  is at #21...

That's about the time (1989) that I thought MTV was beginning to change and lose its realevance.  By 1992 it wasn't MTV anymore.

Even back then MTV was questionable...especially that  they had "House of Style", "Remote Control" (1987 to 1990), and repeats of "Young Ones"...

Well, they probably still aired videos  in regular viewing  hours and more variety  rather just just rap & alternative

The only one of those non music shows that they had on that I ever watched was "Remote Control."  I loved "Club MTV" and I'll never understand why they took that off?

Considering that the 100 Greatest of the 1980's was ranked in November of 1989, "Rhythm Nation (Janet Jackson) and "Janie's Got A Gun" (Aerosmith) weren't released as a single or was too recent. Especially that the albums "Rythm Nation" & "Pump" were released later that year.

Condsidering the list's from 1989 since it's mostly focused towards the second half of the '80's, there's not much from the early '80's...

Devo "Whip It" (1980), memorable video with Devo with their trademark flower pots at a dude ranch...

Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime" (1981), though "Burning Down The House" was ranked it's just as memorable. Especially the "Same As It Ever Was" part with David Bryne doing that chopping movement with his arm. Choreographed by Toni Basil.

The Go-Go's "Our Lips Are Sealed" (1982), fun video the the band driving around Los Angeles and dancing in a water fountain. Wonder if that inspired the intro from the show "Friends"?

Toni Basil "Mickey" (1982), catchy song and campy video with Toni Basil, dressed as a cheerleader...

J. Geils Band "Centerfold" (1982), fun video with Peter Wolf surrounded by attractive women wearing lingerie & also sweaters.

Bow Wow Wow "I Want Candy" (1982), one of the many new wave songs that became popular due to MTV's airplay and never entered the Top 40. It's a catchy song and a fun video featuring scenes with the band members buried up to their neck on the sand.

Billy Joel "Uptown Girl" (1983), campy video with Billy Joel as a mechanic and features his future wife Christie Brinkley.

Men Without Hats "The Safety Dance" (1983), the Renaissance  Fair setting is very much mememorable along with the "S" shaped  gestures...

Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It" (1984), hilarious video with a teenager turning into Dee Sider after his father (Mark Metcalf of "Animal House") gives him a "lecture" (or yelling like a drill sargeant) at him.

Ratt "Round & Round" (1984), another campy glam metal video with Ratt disrupting a dinner party that features cameo from Milton Berle.

Van Halen "Hot For Teacher" (1984), perhaps the best Van Halen video with memorable images, characters (ie "Waldo"), and that it's far superior than their video for "Jump", IMHO.

David Lee Roth "Just A Gigolo" (1985), another funny video that satirizes popular music videos and artists of the era from Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, and also the fitness video craze.

Beastie Boys "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" (1986), suprised that didn't made the cut...

Cinderella "Nobody's Fool" (1986), good song and the video's very much a follow up to "Shake Me" with the polka dotted/not-so-ugly step sisters and the young woman, which features a transformation of wardrobe towards the middle of the video.

Janet Jackson "The Pleasure Principle" (1987), great video that showcases Janet's dance moves at a warehouse.

Debbie Gibson "Foolish Beat"  (1988) & "Out Of The Blue" (1988)

LL Cool J "Goin' Back To Cali" (1988), great black & white video featuring LL driving out of LA with great imagery...

Michael Jackson "Smooth Criminal" (1988), perhaps his best from his "Bad" era videos, IMHO. The video pays homage to the 1930's.

Tom Petty "Free Fallin" (1989), great blend of 50's Americana and present day 1989

MTV Top 100 Videos of All Time with a contest, which aired a month before their "100 Videos of the '80's" countdown. (1989)


Though probably would be mostly the same as the '80's list, though probably ranked differently and/or with a few different videos placed. #1 very much might've been the same.

MTV have actually ranked other videos as the "all time greatest", though usually an artist the channel had favoritism at that particular time or whatever.


1990 MTV have actually ranked "Vogue" (Madonna) as the best, "November Rain" (Guns N' Roses) on MTV Top 200 in  1993, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (Nirvana) for MTV's Top 500 in 1997.

In 1999, MTV teamed up with TV Guide for the Top 100 Greatest Videos, which "Thriller" remained #1.

These lists they make have no continuity. Anyone?

Very much true.

Besides the music that was popular, the lists also reflects what favoritism the channel had in certain artists/genres and videos that were given heavy rotation.  In contrast to Billboard's year-end, which are based on over all sales and radio airplay.

The "all time" countdowns were more likely thrown together since it was one of the rare time it would air vintage music videos. Well, up to around 1998 since there specials mostly featured commentary and brief clips similar to VH1 specials from the past decade.

It seems like the only people that think MTV is relevant anymore are the ones at MTV.
