I saw a commercial for the VMA's or is it the American music awards, well whatever it is, the commercial said NKOTB would be performing. How the heck they managed to pull off that gig is beyond me.
If Deb got that kind of exposure she could easily re establish her career. Not to the height that it was but possibly get picked up by a label.

They were backed by a major label (Interscope),  got tons of promotion (ie "Tody Show", "VH1"), and also worked with the latest  acts like NeYo and Pussycat Dolls.  Their comeback album actually topped the charts some months ago. I also somewhat found it puzzling myself.

There's a few threads/posts about them on the forum.

Not to mention they had a few sold out concerts too and I attended one of them.

Actually watched the AMA's tonight.  I liked the opener Aguilera with her 4-5 hit song medley.  Both Xtina and Pink with her "Sober" song were knockout performances in my eyes.  I wasn't sold as much with Mariah, Beyonce, or Taylor Swift.  I quit at 10:00 after seeing Beyonce perform.  Also, Miley did a number.  She actually wasn't half bad. If she can get choice songs, she's got a singing future.

I can't believe the Eagles made one of the categories.  I didn't think their new album had any hit come out of it.  If they're going to stick a veteran act in there, they might as well have put Journey in there.  Their new vocalist has covered songs Steve Perry could have done at one time.  He's amazing.

The only rock band I saw play was Coldplay.  That's not even rock in my book.

Saw New Kids do their set after Xtina's.  They stole/repeated the 4-5 hit song medley idea from Aguilera - making it somewhat tedious for me.  Joey's vocals have definitely changed.  It's to be expected though.  I thought Donnie was the best vocals-wise.

Sorry to get off topic...just felt like commenting on AMA's.

I remember when I just couldn't wait for the AMAs every year.  Now it's like I don't even know that it's on anymore.  The show has really changed.  I don't think it's just that I'm getting older, it just doesn't have the energy that it used to have.  I watched only a few minutes of it last night.

Personally, it's just another awards show or popularity contest.

Deb hosted in 1989, but lost an award (Best Female Artist, I think) to Whitney Houston. In retrospect, Deb should've won since Whitney was often praised a lot by critics. Don't get me wrong since she can actually sing, but whoever selects the winners should give other talented artists a chance. Unfortunately there's no clips (or were) on YouTube and was more  into "Ninja Turtles" at the time.

I remember several years ago (2000 or 2001)  where Deb presented an award and wore a black low cut outfit. Ironically, it was when a certain pop act with the initials BS hosted.

Didn't watch since I don't like most of today's music and unfortunately Natasha Bedingfield's recent songs (ie "Pocketful..." & "Angel")  haven't been as popular  compared to "These Words" & "Unwritten" it appears that not much people are into Duffy nor The Ting Tings.  Though I have to admit that I like a few more "current" artists now than 8 years ago.

The Eagles debuted at #1 with their recent release Long Road Out Of Eden, so I don't know why you have a problem with them being on the show if they're nominated, unless you drank the haterade.

I don't " hate on " The Eagles, it's just debatable whether they deserve the nomination.

The way music popularity is tracked is so different compared to what I remember back in the '80's.  I was just reading some Billboard stuff and this link made for some good reading.  I now understand how the Jonas Brothers have 5 songs make the charts.

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/chart_beat/chat.jsp

It's all convoluted really.  In the case of Road to Eden, I assume the Eagle's established fan base made a huge effect on that cd becoming #1 album or whatever for a week.  The same claim can be made for AC/DC's Black Ice.

Their older fans will buy whatever new is released from those bands generally.
Slipknot had a #1 top 200 album, Metallica had a decent turn with their new one, yet I wonder if they will even be nominated in next year's VMA awards for rock category?

I find it a joke that new cd's are starting to get released one song at a time for downloads.  It kind of distorts trends in music charts, yet this is real - we have to accept it for what it is.  Too bad catalog songs remain "off the charts".

My opinion - Rush's Snake and Arrows and David Gilmour's Live In Gdansk (or his latest studio cd) might have been worthy offerings in the rock category.  But that category in the VMA's is so broad that they have no chance anymore.

This conversation might also fit well with what's being said in "Music Climate Change" topic in the Off-topics forum.  Just looking at Billboard's many "top charts" kind of opened my eyes.

How does Deb launch a successful new cd with the changing formats in radio, downloads, and charts?  Should she bother to care and just release for her fan base?  Like using Myspace music label?   Huh

In interviews, she have stated that she wants a successful comeback like Tina Turner.

Though (Like I've mentioned many times) a huge comeback is very unlikely, a moderate comeback is possible with the right promotion and  regular rotation on adult contemporary stations whenever she releases her album in the future (only time will tell)

The music industry would probably still be the same by the next decade.

I think that another hit song is possible.  She's already had that really when "Say Goodbye" hit #24 or #23 on the AC charts.  That gave her the distinction of being one of a handful of people that have had hit songs in at least three different decades.

I'll probably get trashed with this comment, but many of the celebrities that are often talked about a lot like Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie are often kissed upon by the media, but haven't  done a hit movie or tv show for a while.

Then again, now the media is mostly into gossip/tabloids...

Rather not go into those that are famous for the sake of being famous or "never was"...  Roll Eyes

I get what you mean but those 2 are bad exemple

Aniston  last 3  movies were the  2nd, 3rd and 4 th biggest  hits of her
career (break up, marly and me, hes just  not that into you)
The only movie she ever did that grossed more was bruce almighty

Jolie had the 3rd biggest hit of her career in 2008 with Wanted( only mr mrs smith and shark tale did better)

My mistake...  Embarrassed

It's just that I always see/hear gossip whenever I glance a magazine cover or looking at entertainment news.

One example that I can think of right off the top of my head is Cameron Diaz.  She is totally fawned upon by the entertainment media and her movies are usually awful and bomb at the box office.  She also has an abrasive personality.  She refuses to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans and I'm surprised that she isn't called out on that any more than she is, which isn't much.  If you notice she plays more or less the same role in every movie and plays it the same way.  She's a one dementional actress with minimal talent.
