Never liked the show and it's about time for it to get canned.

1998...
I was watching more VH1 at the time and only watched "Sifl & Olly" and some music specials on MTV.

Honestly, can't picture Deb on "TRL" and she probably would also really be out of place on the new show "FN MTV" , though host Pete Wentz probably doesn't have a clue on who Deb is.

FN MTV only lasted a few episodes...
MTV's also leaving their Times Square studios, which they were located since 1997.
Honestly, I liked the older MTV sets better since "TRL" looked more like a teenybopper version of "Today Show". Plus the network was pretty much already a cesspool by that time...

No network has gone downhill worse than MTV has.

Disney Channel, was aimed towards the whole family and aired actual Disney programming and now mostly caters towards teens/tweens since the early 2000's.

Disney Channel has definately gone down the toilet. Disney itself has radically changed from what it was when I was a kid. I don't recognize it as Disney anymore. I think that the big difference between Disney and MTV is that Disney is still relevant but to a different generation. MTV is struggling just to even be mentioned among young people.

Come to think of it. Britney Spears might've been one of the last artists that actually had a trademark music video (or a music video known to many people whether they like the song/artist or not), which most people are familiar with the Lolita school girl outfit for "Baby One More Time".
There's no denying that "TRL" was the last popular music based show on MTV, though personally I consider it the worst.
Not just because of the music that was popular at the time (ie nu-metal, rap, disposable teen pop, whatever MTV kissed upon), but because the videos were rarely shown in their entirety, interrupted by screaming teenyboppers (or "email requests" scrolled at the bottom), and that Carson Daily was a dull host.
Not to mention music videos were shafted to dusk/early morning hours during the second half of the 1990's to give more overexposure for non-music programming (ie constant "Real World" & "Road Rules" marathons).
Plus the cancellations of "Headbangers Ball", "Yo! MTV Raps", "Top 20 Countdown", and the "Unplugged" specials around the same time.
Around 1998/1999 I was watching more VH1 (which would jump a few years later). Only watched a few specials & animated shows on MTV.
