MTV's 25 Most Played (not accurate considering the source, though still interesting in a way  Roll Eyes)

I vaugely remember watching the special, though at that point I was watching mostly a  few specials & "Sifl & Olly" on MTV and more VH1.

Don't think they aired the videos in their entirity since I recall that the "100 Greatest" mostly had about 3 minutes of the music video  with people talking over them and "25 Lame" with second rate comedians trashing the videos. Sort of like a precursor to countless VH1 Specials from the past decade.

The '80's videos listed were omnipresent on MTV's "Greatest Videos" countdowns and/or '80's retrospects.

Also some were recent, though by the second half of the 1990's MTV only played videos during the late night/daytime hours. More likely to appeal to their "demographic" or whatever.

Unfortunately, can't find MTV listings from the 1980's and early '90's. Though from sources (ie reading from other forums), they still aired a good amount and also on regular viewing hours.

I know MTV was all music 24/7, though aware that they've started expanding & experimenting with original programming by the later part of the '80's. Though music videos would get shafted to about 15 hours by the 1990's.

Around 1996/1997 (when I started watching the channel), I've seen Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right (To Plarty)" on regular rotation and even "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn" a few times.  Shocked

If the list were to be accurate, it would be dominated by video clips from the '80's and maybe some from the  early '90's.

List of the 25 videos from the list (not in order)

14...'80's
6...early '90's
5...late '90's

So, MTV basically proved themselves that the they aired more videos in the '80's...  Cheesy

Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star (1979/first video to air on the channel  in 1981)
Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf (1983)
The Police - Every Breath You Take (1983)
Michael Jackson - Thriller (1983)
Madonna - Like A Virgin (1984)
a-ha - Take On Me (1985)
Dire Straits - Money For Nothing (1985)
Run DMC/Aerosmith - Walk This Way (1986)
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (1986)
Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right (1986)
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer (1987)
U2 - With Or Without You (1987)
Guns N Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine (1988)
Aerosmith - Janie's Got A Gun (1989)
MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This (1990)
Madonna - Vogue (1990)
Guns N Roses - November Rain (1992)
Pearl Jam - Jeremy (1992)
Dr. Dre - Nuthin' But A G Thang (1993)
Boyz II Men - I'll Make Love To You (1994)
TLC - Waterfalls (1995)
Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise (1995)
Alanis Morisette - Ironic (1996)
Spice Girls - Wannabe (1997)
Brandy/Monica - The Boy Is Mine (1998)

Though odd there's only one Michael Jackson video on the list. Especially that he's omnipresent on countdowns & retrospects. Especially "Beat It" & "Billie Jean".

Also no Janet.

When the management that created MTV left the network in the early 90s and a new group came in, that's when everything changed.  They didn't have the same vision and they ran the channel into the ground.  I'm not sure that MTV will even exist in a few years.

Several days ago, Fuse aired their  Top 100 sexiest music videos, which majority were from the past decade.

It's ironic that Fuse (well several years ago) have poked fun at MTV since they're pretty much an example of what that channel would be now if it still focused on music...

Though I was more focused on other things, I'm not familiar with many of the songs from the past 10 years. Except for the ones overexposed like Sisqo's "Thong Song".

Janet Jackson's videos have been omitted, though unfortunately not surprising considering the Super Bowl fiasco that ruined her career. Though there's been many "celebrities" that are mostly known for scandals that are still popular or kissed upon by the media. Go figure...

There's one Mariah Carey video, though from the past decade.

1980's:
73 Madonna - "Open Your Heart" (1987)... OK

68 Van Halen - "Hot For Teacher" (1984)... more campy, though still a fun video. Same for other hard rock/hair metal videos.  Grin Cheesy Cool

55 Madonna - "Like A Virgin" (1984)... also OK

1990's:
75 Juvenile - "Back That Thang Up" (1998)...meh

69 TLC - "Red Light Special" (1995)... don't remember

49 Britney Spears - "...Baby One More Time" (1998)...even as a teenager, I thought it was a tad inappropriate. Ironically I also thought she would be a one hit wonder...

46 Prince - "Cream" (1991)...underated classic  Cool

37 Madonna - "Erotica" (1992)... meh

33 Aerosmith - "Crazy" (1993)...overrated and they had better songs/music videos

30 Jennifer Lopez - "Waiting For Tonight" (1999)...OK song, though wouldn't place among the Top 10 since the video's average

24 George Michael - "Freedom '90" (1990)... OK, though prefer the song over the video

17 Fiona Apple - "Criminal" (1997)... ewww

07 LL Cool J - "Doin' It" (1997)...OK song, though average video

03 Chris Isaak - "Wicked Game" (1991)...indifferent

02 D'Angelo - "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" (1999)... don't remember

01 Madonna - "Justify My Love" (1990)...overrated, boring, and also one of her worst songs!

Personal favorite from the last 11 years:  Grin Kiss

11 Fountains Of Wayne - "Stacy's Mom" (2003)... Rachel Hunter looked hot and liked the song/video

Britney's videos were way too much for someone her age and Fiona Apple is one of the least sexy persons I've ever seen.  That emaciated, "heroine chic" look just isn't sexy at all.

I would have put Jennifer Lopez's "My Love Don't Cost a Thing" in there.
