Retro Subway (2006) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsjs3boAgok)
An actual Subway commercial from 1985 edited for a 2006 reairing. Catchy jingle that disses hamburger & chicken restuarants.

Some long discontinued icon: Swiss Miss lady from the Swiss Miss products
(http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.144496170.jpg)

Honestly, can't find an answer though somebody from Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonliebigstuff/4186599267/)  stated that the Swiss Miss dropped the mascot in 1987 and replaced her with a kid (with similar hairdo as the fictional young woman). There hasn't been any mascots for about a decade. Not sure about the 1990's... There's no info about the mascots on Wiki nor the Conagrafood site (which owns Swiss Miss).

1960's version of the Swiss Miss lady (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonliebigstuff/3348725280/sizes/l/in/photostream/), which the drawing is quite pleasing. Wonder if they had models/actresses dressed as her in commercials? Or even throughout the years in the 1970's & '80's.

1972 claymation commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_idQFFW1kE)
Recalled that it aired on TV Land as one of the "Retromercials"...back when the network would show classic commercials
1978 Swiss Miss lite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCXPxuc0YgQ) at 0:47
1981 Swiss Miss Pudding Bars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw302mtqH7o) (Featuring the Swiss Miss lady as a puppet)

And no she didn't turn into a Spiderman villian for that musical fiasco

You just have to make sure you get that powder mix stirred up really good because it has a tendency to clump.

Everybody knows about Bit-O-Honey but I remember Bit-O-Chocolate.

I actually liked the Budweiser frogs, though I'm against the product the characters endorsed. Guessing they were discontinued due to appealing to children much like Joe Camel with cigarettes.

Have to admit that Flo the Progressive spokeswoman is actually quite cute...

My all time favorite commercials were the ones for Lite Beer from Miller that had John Madden, Rodney Dangerfield, and many others.  Those were the best and that company dropped the ball when they discontinued them.  They used to always have that fight where they would yell "TASTES GREAT!!!  LESS FILLING!!!"

First batch of commercials (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nKudWBBYlQ) from MTV's first hour. Without the music videos, which were actually ads themselves to promote the song/artist.

1:55 The Bulk Binder "If you wanna make history...Stuff It!"

3:22 MTV promo "Television used to be called a vast wasteland", the irony

4:17 Mountain Dew

6:38 Atari

Not necessarily favorites but I remember these Chrysler commercials with Ricardo Montalban.  It still wasn't a real New Yorker though.  Those went of of production in the 70s.  Those in the 80s were just an econobox with a stretched frame.

This is nostalgia from the time I was a kid back in the 70s.  I live where the Auto Train used to have loading facilities and I remember it well when I used to ride Amtrak's "Floridian" before it got cut from service back in 1979.  They had these red and purple locomotives and passenger cars with some very 70s like lettering on the sides and very 70s like decor.

Most of these were from the 1970s when Amtrak was really trying to drum up business.  It was struggling to survive and was facing the constant threat of being completely eliminated from the next Federal budget if it continued to run on such a big deficit.  The jingle was later sung by Richie Havens.  That's a famous actress in some of these but I can't remember who she is.  I remember the days where there were so Superliners and Amtrak was still in its original color schemes.

I think this was the only commercial for the Mustang SVO.  I loved the looks of the car but the price was outrageous and it's turbo four couldn't run with the GT's V-8.  I've looked around for an SVO in good shape but the collector's market on these things has gone through the roof because so few were made.

Now this is how a lot of car commercials were 25+ years ago.  Now they have become somewhat obnoxious with overly loud music and flashy lights.  Sometimes the understated approach is better.  Narrated by Burgiss Meredith.

Another one in my car series, this one a 1985 commercial for the Honda Prelude.  I can't say that I've ever been a fan of Honda cars.  They are good cars but I've just never been a fan of their engine characteristics.  The point is that this was a really good ad campaign and it's one that more ad agencies and auto makers should pay attention to and get inspiration from.

Even though this was a fake commercial from the movie "RoboCop" I still think it's funny and amusing.  The car really stole the show.  It's just a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with a fiberglass body kit on it.  There are body kits for them but the problem is that now those cars are very hard to find, unlike back in 1987 when there were still plenty of them around and you could get one in good condition for about $1,000.

Some commercials from 1987.  It's like producers are trying too hard these days.  Old school is usually better.

Chrysler commercial from 1980 featuring Frank Sinatra promoting the Chrysler Imperial.  They even made a special edition of the car simply called the "Frank Sinatra Edition" that was blue inside and out.  If someone has a Chrysler Imperial Frank Sinatra Edition today in good condition it's worth quite a bit of money.

I think I remember car commercials better because for one there are so many of them on TV and also because they had to be made a little differently from other commercials.

Another in the car series.  From Lincoln in 1988.  The art of the good car commercial seems to be lost now.

Commercials that ran on CBS around Christmas of 1987.  One thing I notice about these is that there is the ability to sell, even hard sell, without being over the top like commercials are today.  It seems like there is a school of directing or current style that says that the louder and more obnoxious you are the more you will get noticed.  You might get noticed but that doesn't mean that people will respond in a positive way.

I looked around for this and I found the commercial for O'Grady's Potato Chips.  These things were on the market in 1984 and 1985 and then they just disappeared.  To this day I think they were the best potato chip I've ever had.  I don't know what happened to the company.

This was a commercial for Lincoln in 1982 set to Vivaldi's "Winter."  When you think about it car commercials dominate TV ad time and are really a reflection of the times.  I've commented before on how now it's like it you don't have as many lights as possible or these quick cut scenes set to a really loud soundtrack then you don't have a commercial.  If anything all that gets a lot of people to do is hit the mute button or even change the channel.

Those Panther platform Lincolns were considered to be big at that time and are huge cars for today with this constant trend to downsize but they were tiny when you compare them to the Lincolns from the 1970s.

I started thinking about this more and I decided to look up some older car commercials and noticed how they changed over the years.  I found some for Cadillac and Lincoln from the 70s and then compared them to commercials they had from the 80s and 90s.  They slowly changed from a soft sell approach during the 70s into a nearly hustling style of today.

Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Talisman from 1974.

Cadillac Eldorado commercial with Arnold Palmer from 1974.

Lincoln Continental commercial from 1977.

Lincoln Town Car commercial from 1989.

Cadillac Escalade commercial from 1999

The pace of the commercials got faster and the music got louder.  The 1970s weren't a good decade for this country but those big Cadillacs and Lincolns were really the last great American cars.  They were very well made and used high quality materials.  There have been good cars since then but not like those were.

A series of commercials from October, 1987.  They have the Pontiac "We Build Excitement" commercial in this one.  Being someone who majored in advertising back in college I remember that the art of a good commercial or ad is that you didn't come across as trying to hustle the consumer.  Now that rule has gone right out the window.  That super aggressive, hustling school of thought in advertising started coming into the picture in the 90s and really became the standard by 2000.

I think this was the first Aflac commercial with the duck.  If it wasn't the first it had to have been no later than the second one.

The new Geico commercial with Ice T is kind of funny but they also made a behind the scenes video.

This has always been my all time favorite Christmas commercial but it seems to be on less each year.  This year I only saw it once.

Little Caesars had some creative and funny commercials back in the day.  Now you don't see many of them on TV anymore.
