This was a commercial for Lincoln in 1982 set to Vivaldi's "Winter."  When you think about it car commercials dominate TV ad time and are really a reflection of the times.  I've commented before on how now it's like it you don't have as many lights as possible or these quick cut scenes set to a really loud soundtrack then you don't have a commercial.  If anything all that gets a lot of people to do is hit the mute button or even change the channel.

Those Panther platform Lincolns were considered to be big at that time and are huge cars for today with this constant trend to downsize but they were tiny when you compare them to the Lincolns from the 1970s.

I started thinking about this more and I decided to look up some older car commercials and noticed how they changed over the years.  I found some for Cadillac and Lincoln from the 70s and then compared them to commercials they had from the 80s and 90s.  They slowly changed from a soft sell approach during the 70s into a nearly hustling style of today.

Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Talisman from 1974.

Cadillac Eldorado commercial with Arnold Palmer from 1974.

Lincoln Continental commercial from 1977.

Lincoln Town Car commercial from 1989.

Cadillac Escalade commercial from 1999

The pace of the commercials got faster and the music got louder.  The 1970s weren't a good decade for this country but those big Cadillacs and Lincolns were really the last great American cars.  They were very well made and used high quality materials.  There have been good cars since then but not like those were.

A series of commercials from October, 1987.  They have the Pontiac "We Build Excitement" commercial in this one.  Being someone who majored in advertising back in college I remember that the art of a good commercial or ad is that you didn't come across as trying to hustle the consumer.  Now that rule has gone right out the window.  That super aggressive, hustling school of thought in advertising started coming into the picture in the 90s and really became the standard by 2000.

I think this was the first Aflac commercial with the duck.  If it wasn't the first it had to have been no later than the second one.

The new Geico commercial with Ice T is kind of funny but they also made a behind the scenes video.

This has always been my all time favorite Christmas commercial but it seems to be on less each year.  This year I only saw it once.

Little Caesars had some creative and funny commercials back in the day.  Now you don't see many of them on TV anymore.
